Camp Wekeela, offers a safe, fun, nurturing environment in a bubolic mountain lake setting.
Wekeela is magical! The recipe for this magic starts with a beautiful outdoor setting. Wekeela's setting is one of great natural beauty. It helps children find the regenerative properties of nature away from the big cities. Walt Whitman was right (and so were our mothers). The secret of making the best person is to grow in the open air and eat and sleep with the earth. Our mom's paraphrased him every time we sat in front of a TV and said "go outside and play!"
At Wekeela, we teach responsibility. Kids (and their college-aged counselors) need to try and fail, and try to succeed to know they are growing in competence and confidence. These are lessons too important to leave until adulthood.
Wekeela creates relationships. A critical camp ingredient is a foundation of small groups that invite and reinforce membership through rituals and traditions. The informal and formal rituals that a camp group repeats strengthen the bonds of membership, and help store vivid memories of friendships, accomplishments and joy. These memories not only last a lifetime but improve with age.
Our staff is simply the best in the world! We will continue to recruit and hire the best staff possible. To a camper, counselors are awesome. They are cool. Some camps have organizational charts layers deep, but it's the counselors who live with kids everyday and have by far the biggest impact. A great staff is another important ingredient.
Since 1922, there has been a resident (sleepaway) camp at Wekeela. Each summer has included every one of the above ingredients. As a result, there have been over 90 successful summers on the shores of Little Bear Pond. In this new era we are not changing any of the core ingredients. The recipe for the magic at Wekeela will remain the same. We do plan on extraordinarily good planning, staffing, and implementation for the upcoming summer and beyond.
We embrace the tremendous responsibility we have. Our campers and the Wekeela community come first. Wekeela will continue to be a safe, fun, nurturing environment for children to grow and learn. We do whatever it takes to continue to keep Wekeela the best camp. Each year we have new projects, enhancements and improvements.
Thanks again for your interest in Camp Wekeela. We hope you will consider joining us in the great state of Maine!
